Faith in Peace Concerts is supporting the Franciscan Action Network and other partners in the fourth annual "Faith in Democracy" interfaith vigil. We are holding our vigil on the eve of the anniversary of the January 6, 2021 attack on the People's House and our democracy and the day before Congress confirms the election results. We are tentatively planning on having the event somewhere on the Capitol Mall or nearby from 3:30-5pm on Sunday, January 5. In the wake of the recent elections, we believe this will be our largest and most important vigil to date.
We plan on creating an event similar to the ones of the past, focusing on nonpartisan messages from different faith traditions and inspirational music/spiritual singing. We'll share messages of faith that unify Americans and emphasize our strong commitment to, and concerns about, our democracy and our freedoms at this juncture.
We envision a positive and determined message similar to the one that Vice President Harris shared in her concession speech when she urged Americans to embrace the democratic process and continue the peaceful fight for democracy and our Constitution. We will also emphasize our commitment to the basics ideals of our country, including freedom of expression and the right to peaceful protest.
The organizers of the "Faith In Democracy in 2024'' on January 5, 2024 vigil showed that people of faith can be uniters, not dividers in today’s America. The vigil, which included important leaders from a variety of faith traditions, was led by the Franciscan Action Network, Faith in Peace Concerts, and the Declaration for American Democracy. In this video, the Reverend Jim Wallis of the Georgetown Center for Faith and Justice gave remarks reflecting on "Good faith winning over bad religion."
